Editor's Note:
As always, StockUpTicks pursues
the better mousetrap stories from the publicly traded world, those
companies who endeavor to improve upon existing concepts and products.
And occasionally, we find these compelling plans amid the masses.
It is with far less frequency, however, that we find a story such
as this with an environmental aspect.
Now, dear reader, we know that industrial
pallets aren't "sexy". They may carry sexy or exciting items in
their utilitarian travels but at base they are the yeoman of the
transport industry. And for years, this industry has been reliant
on wood pallets to conduct their business. They break, they're
heavy, they require the destruction of trees and worse yet, they
can cause injuries to the labor force via nails and splintered
edges.
Enter a plastic solution; stronger, impervious
to extreme temperature, insects and more. And they're recyclable.
We've taken the time to outline some important
aspects of RPM Technologies, the producer of these innovative
plastics. It is also our belief that Darwin was right and eventually
the stronger "species" prevails.
Perhaps, in the end that may be more important
than "sexy."
Please take the time to read this profile.
ABOUT RPM
"An RPM plastic pallet
that costs $11 will last at least 75 trips, or $0.15
per trip. A Grade A wood pallet
that costs $8 will last for about seven trips, or $1.14
per trip. "
RPM Technologies Inc. develops, produces and markets plastic
pallets used to facilitate the storage or transport of a wide
variety of goods via by forklift within a warehouse operation
or via truck, freight train or other cargo carrier. RPM
has developed what it believes to be a proprietary processing
system of producing stronger, environmentally-superior, cost effective,
plastic pallets using mostly recycled raw materials.
Since the pallets are made from recycled plastic they overcome
many of the drawbacks associated with wood pallets including:
durability, weight, environmental concerns and the potential for
injuries caused by puncture wounds from nails and splinters.
RPM launched its marketing efforts in 2000 and began direct sales
of its plastic pallet products. The Company's time and efforts
have been devoted to market and product research, product design
and development, preparation of marketing plans and strategies,
and obtaining the financing necessary to expand operations.
THE MARKET
"The pallet market in
US alone is approximately a $10
billion a year market. Currently,
90% of the market is wood pallets and 10% is plastic. The pallet
market is shifting from wood to plastic at the rate of 3% to
5% per year."
The plastic pallet industry began in the 1980's in response
to the need for lighter-weight pallets that met new environmental
regulations and concerns. Plastic pallets are strong, can
withstand extreme temperatures and are impervious to insects and
water. The Company sells its plastic pallets and accessories
through a network of wood and plastic pallet distributors strategically
located in the U.S., Canada, and Central and South America.
Pallets are used in virtually all industries in which products
are broadly distributed, including, but not limited to, automotive,
chemical, consumer products, grocery, produce and food production,
paper and forest products, retail, steel and metals industries.
Forklifts, pallet trucks and pallet jacks are used to move loaded
pallets, reducing the need for costly hand loading and unloading
at distribution centers and warehouses.
Wood pallets currently comprise the vast majority of the entire
pallet industry. Based upon the company's review of industry
documentation and an internal telephone survey of 25 plastic pallet
manufacturers, RPM estimates that plastic pallets constitute approximately
6% of the total pallets used in the U.S.
Approximately 90 countries have mandated the discontinuance of
soft wood packaging materials for the importation of goods into
their countries. With $30 billion spent each year on packaging
materials and $10 billion of that in pallets, RPM plans to capture
a significant share in the profitable, export market. The
company's target market consists of grocers, bottlers, distributors,
and packaged goods manufacturers that have traditionally used
wood pallets. The estimated annual sales volume for all of the
products featured on the RPM website can be estimated at $50 billion.
An expanding distribution network and technologically-advanced
product line provide RPM with the competitive edge to meet pent-up
demand for wood pallet alternatives over the next five years.
The Science Behind
The Revenues - What Is A Plastic Pallet Made Of ?
A pallet is a portable platform designed to accommodate
the storing or moving of cargo or freight. Pallets have been used
for decades as an efficient method for handling many different
types of materials. Until recently, pallets have primarily been
manufactured from wood.
RPM plastic pallets are a mix of recyclable plastic materials
that enhances economy and structural integrity. The blends used
consist of HDPE, PPO, Polypropylene and PET in a proprietary
formulation. A thermoplastic additive, developed by RPM in conjunction
with Endex Polymer Additives, Inc., enables the amalgamation of
chemically incompatible polymers. This
permits a significant reduction in raw material and processing
costs while producing an end product of superior strength
and durability.
The additive provides efficient integration of commingled dissimilar
polymers, which would normally have little or no affinity for
each other. It reduces melt viscosity and acts as a wetting agent
for inorganic substances. Tests performed under strict laboratory
conditions have clearly indicated a marked improvement in bonding.
This additive also enables polymers to be molded at lower processing
temperatures. Additionally, it serves as a filler or extender
to thermoplastics, lowering the cost
of the end product.
RPM PRODUCT FEATURES
RPM pallets weigh considerably less than a wood pallet
of comparable size. RPM's recycled plastic pallets can be made
to specification and color too. Special features include a non-slide,
sure-grip surface and bottom texture to eliminate sliding
pallets and shifting loads. An inter-locking, nesting feature
saves space and facilitates easier shipping and storage. Strategically
placed drainage holes enable easy cleaning. Undesirable characteristics
such as leeching, color-transfer and odor retention have been
eliminated.
Pallet Enterprise magazine, conducted a survey in 1997 that investigated
the use of substitute materials for wood pallets. Plastic came
out on the very top. The three most important considerations stated
by shippers were:
- 1) Cost per use
- 2) Durability
- 3) Employee handling, safety and
quality
