Energy Cost: Gas vs. Electricity
You may not spend as much money at the gas pump, but wouldn't the electricity bill go through the roof? Your energy bill will be less overall by driving with electricity. EVs are so efficient that the cost per mile driven is significantly less. Electric "fuel" costs are low – about 4 to 8 cents/mile for electricity OR LESS! For instance, if you travel 25 miles on 5kWh of electric power – it would cost you average 40 cents to cover the same distance (@ 8 cents/kWh) that it takes a gallon of gasoline at $2 and $3 a gallon a current (2007) prices. Studies indicate that over 90% of daily driving is well under 100 miles. Some power companies will give EV owners special low rates for nighttime (off peak) charging.

Dependability
Are plug-in vehicles dependable? Battery Electric Vehicles are the most dependable vehicles made. EVs have the potential to last as long as or longer than gasoline automobiles, with less regular maintenance. (no smog checks, oil changes or tune-ups). The vehicle, equipped with Hybrid Technologies' on-board rapid charge system, was selected based on its zero-emissions, high-speed capacity, charge time, and overall functionality for the EPA's Near-Road Air Quality Study.

As part of its Near Road Research Program, EPA's Office of Research & Development (ORD) will use the PT Cruiser to study air pollutant concentrations alongside major roadways, which may be a health concern to people living and working nearby.

ARCADIS, a prime contractor, selected Hybrid Technologies as the subcontractor for the project and was the party completing the overall selection process and award.

The all-lithium PT Cruiser has a charge time using an on-board rapid charge system of 2.6 hrs. The vehicle was developed in Mooresville, North Carolina.

Hybrid Technologies originally developed the PT Cruiser as part of a SPACE ACT Agreement with NASA. The large capacity vehicle is currently in use at NASA Kennedy Space Center.
