Ikona Gear International, Inc. (OTC Pink Sheets: IKGI)
May 5th, 2005.

IKONA GEAR INTERNATIONAL INC. (OTCBB: IKGI)

Dear Reader,

As they say, there's moments when you can’t see the forest for the trees.  Yet, sometimes a little perspective is all you need.

In a market that waits salivating for glittering man-bites-dog news to make their move, perhaps the savvy investor is he who looks at the aggregate total of a company’s news and deciphers the overall direction of the company.  For some savvy investors, it’s the execution of a business plan powered by sound management that minimizes risk and maximizes potential.  That’s the way we, the editors of StockUpTicks, see it.

So, with that in mind, today StockUpTicks will take a slightly different turn on our usual profile or news oriented distributions to you, our dear reader.  Today, instead, we will offer you a brief summary of events for one company proving the process described above. IKONA GEAR INTERNATIONAL INC. (OTCBB: IKGI), it seems, is a company hitting benchmarks and milestones in successive fashion- even if the market at large hasn’t quite grasped it fully yet.

Maybe a market in flux as it has been doesn’t have the patience to look at Ikona’s news since the first of THIS year alone.  With the market bouncing in 500 point swings from month to month, perhaps investors are too focused on the market at large to notice the companies getting it done behind the scenes.

But somewhere under the canopy of trees sheltering view is one company executing its business plan.  And below you will find that we’ve cleared the proverbial way, enabling your review of an interesting story and a solid body of recent news.

Feb. 1, 2005  –  Ikona Gear Introduces Three (3) New Gearing Technologies!

In keeping with its objective of further developing new gearing technologies, Ikona has filed three provisional patent applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The new technologies solve long-standing problems and allow equipment in a wide range of applications (from excavators to automotive parts) to be re-engineered and made lighter, smaller, more reliable and more efficient. The new technology applications comprise:
    • "D-Drive" Gear - Ikona's new differential gear system represents a new concept for differential gears. Differential gears have very broad application but are not widely used because current designs are inefficient. By applying the Ikona system to the traditional differential design, Ikona has reduced the parts count and increased efficiency, allowing gear reduction units that are simpler and lighter.
    • Slew Ring Gear Reducer - Slew drives are used in applications such as excavators to rotate the cab and arm. The Ikona ring gear eliminates parts normally required to turn the gear, resulting in a more compact system. As with other Ikona gears, the teeth contact ratio is higher than in competitive gears, resulting in higher torque capacity for a given design weight.
    • Rolling Contact "Coupling" For Orbiting Gear Devices - Ikona's new, compact coupling represents a breakthrough for orbiting/cycloidal gear systems which are used in applications such as gearing down electric motors to operate conveyor belts. Typically, such systems are inefficient at transferring power from high speed input shafts to slow speed output shafts because the coupling pins flex. The Ikona design minimizes pin flex and reduces friction, as the pins roll rather than slide. In turn, this allows a unit of a given size to transmit higher torque.
Ikona is currently in discussions with two major manufacturers for the use of its new technologies and is investigating the feasibility of licensing the rolling contact coupling design to coupling manufacturers to improve the performance of their orbiting/cycloidal gear systems.

 About IKONA GEAR

Ikona Gear ("Ikona") designs, manufactures and markets innovative gearing-enabled applications and gear increasing and reduction systems. Ikona's patented intellectual property involves a unique gear tooth form that provides very high gear reduction and very high gear tooth contact. Ikona technology affords significant advantages over traditional planetary gearing systems including: very high torque, reduced size and weight, almost zero backlash, accurate back-and-forth actuation, low wear, superior efficiency and low noise.

Ikona Gear International Inc. is commercializing and further developing its gear technology. Ikona has a unique combination of a revolutionary patented gear technology and the world’s most sophisticated gear engineers – this combination enables design engineers around the world to leverage Ikona’s gear design expertise into their innovative engineering applications.

“Ikona’s gear design is a technological breakthrough—it’s a revolution.”
Dr. John R. Colbourne, one of the world's foremost authorities on gear engineering

The advantages of the Ikona Gear patented gearing technology include:

  • Size and weight reductions in gearing systems enabling installation within size constrained applications
  • Can be manufactured in plastics for a highly rigid and strong gear solution
  • Highest ratio of strength to weight available, especially in gear ratios above 10:1
  • Highest gear ratio available in a single stage gear system, theoretically up to 5,000:1
  • Zero backlash for extreme precision applications
  • Patented gear design, licensable on an exclusive basis, and high gearbox efficiency under various load conditions
  • Gear tooth profiles that are derived mathematically from a path of contact shaped as in the Archimedean spiral
  • The internal gear teeth are conjugate to the pinion teeth
  • The Ikona gear pair has high contact ratio and no tip interference

The unique characteristics of the Ikona Gear make it suitable for many applications in a wide variety of industries. The Company has identified 85 target sectors for the Ikona Gearing System that include: Automotive components, medical applications, alternative energy applications, robotics, precision machinery, high torque machinery, aircraft and military equipment and other low-backlash applications.

"There has not been such a significant invention in gearing technology in well over 50 years."

The Ikona gear mesh consists of an external and internal tooth pair that are unique for each design. With conventional involute gearing, the closer a gear mesh gets to zero backlash, the more chance that even the slightest tolerance errors will cause gear jamming due to contact on both sides of the gear tooth.

With the Ikona Tooth Form,
even at zero backlash,
there is still ample clearance on the non-meshing
side of the tooth.
