2009 FROST & SULLIVAN GREEN TECHNOLOGY AWARD: Aerius won the Frost and Sullivan 2009 North American Wireless Technologies Green Excellence of the Year Award, based on Aerius equipped phone performance. In addition, Frost & Sullivan noted, if Aerius equipped phones were widely deployed carrier cell site CO2 emissions would be reduced by 1.2 million tons per year in the U.S. alone.

Specific Absorption Rate (SAR)

Specific Absorption Rate (SAR): The industry-accepted measure of the quantity of radio frequency (RF) energy that is absorbed by the body. Because a fair portion of the RF signal produced by cell phones is absorbed by our bodies, typical cell phones must transmit excess power in order to be effective. SAR refers to the excess transmit power required due to the cell phone RF signal being absorbed by the body. FCC certification requires phones to have a Specific Absorption Rate of less than 1.6 W/kg.

What it all means
According to the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association, specific absorption rate, or SAR, is "a way of measuring the quantity of radio frequency (RF) energy that is absorbed by the body." For a phone to pass FCC certification and be sold in the United States, its maximum SAR level must be less than 1.6 watts per kilogram. In Europe, the level is capped at 2 watts per kilogram while Canada allows a maximum of 1.6 watts per kilogram. The SAR level listed in our charts represents the highest SAR level measured with the phone next to the ear as tested by the FCC. Keep in mind that it is possible for the SAR level to vary between different transmission bands (the same phone can use multiple bands during a call), and that different testing bodies can obtain different results. Also, it's possible for results to vary between different models of the same phone--such as a handset that's offered by multiple carriers. CNET lists the exposure for voice calls only; the SAR for data use can differ. 

It's important to note that in publishing this list, we are in no way implying that cell phone use is harmful to your health. Research abounds, but much of the literature is contradictory. While some researchers have said there is cause to be "concerned," others disagree and say it is still too early too early to be alarmed. Similarly, though some tests have suggested a link between long-term (10 years or longer) cell phone use and cancer, there still is not conclusive or demonstrated evidence that cell phones cause or don't cause adverse health effects in humans. In short, the jury is still out. Research into the matter will continue, and we will continue to monitor its results. 

If you're concerned about limiting your SAR exposure, you can take a few easy steps beyond purchasing a handset with a low SAR. You can text instead placing a voice call, use a wired headset or speakerphone whenever possible, and carry your phone at least one inch from your body. Some researchers also caution against using your phone in areas with poor coverage since phones emit more radiation when searching for a signal. Children, which have smaller and thinner skulls, should limit cell phone use, and all users, children and adults, should not sleep with an active phone next to their bedside or under their pillow. 

If your phone isn't listed here (U.S. customers) and you've purchased it within the last few years, consult your user manual. Alternatively, you can request the SAR information from the FCC, the manufacturer, or your carrier. You'll need the model number and FCC ID number, which is usually--but not always--listed in the owner's manual or under the phone's battery (you must pop the battery out). The 2009 Frost & Sullivan North American Green Excellence of the Year Award in the field of wireless technologies goes to Aerius International in recognition of its development of a breakthrough cell phone antenna design that increases cell phone battery life by 2 to 4 hours, increases handset range, and single cell coverage area significantly while reducing the frequency of dropped calls. 

By allowing cell sites to work efficiently by using up to 50% less power, this technology, when widely deployed, has the potential to reduce cell site CO2 emissions by up to 1.2 million tons per year just in the United States. The increase in coverage area would also mean reduced infrastructure costs, thereby aiding governments and cell-site operators around the world looking to expand their rural wireless coverage.

The three types of antenna designs used in cell phone handsets manufactured today:

U.S. FCC certified testing has shown that Aerius technology equipped phones reduce power loss into users as measured in SAR to 0.0093 W/kg on average, i.e. by 99.4% below the FCC maximum permissible standard of 1.6 W/kg. It improves upon the performance as measured in SAR of the currently best performing commercially available cell phone by 95.2%. This extends battery life by 2 to 4 hours by allowing them to operate on lesser power. By extending battery life by up to 66%, this technology has the potential to bring about a 50% reduction in battery discards.

Compared to any handset available in the market today, Aerius technology adds between 3dB to 6dB (100% to 300%) more power into carrier link margins. Perhaps most significant, the tests indicate that the technology, by virtually eliminating handset power loss absorbed by the user, increases handset range by 168% and single cell tower coverage area by an average of 282%. In addition, the power saved also means a reduction in carrier cell site CO2 emissions by 5 Tons per cell site per annum, which amounts to a 1.2 million ton reduction in CO2 emissions per annum in the US alone.

CEO – Bill Luxon together with Aerius CTO founded RangeStar Wireless in 1995, now owned by Tyco International.
RangeStar designed and sold new cellphone antenna designs to such companies as Nokia and Samsung, and earned
numerous international design awards. Luxon also received patents on antennas he invented and earned additional
patents on numerous products engineered, manufactured, and sold by companies he founded. Luxon has also led 5
companies from start-up to IPO or M&A.

VP, International Sales – Chuck Closterman has over 25 years sales training, management, recruiting and marketing
experience. He served Polaroid Corporation as national accounts manager where he recruited and trained sales
representatives nationwide, and Sunbeam Appliances in various sales management positions. Closterman recruits and
screens sales reps for Aerius worldwide, and together with Luxon gained commitments from 100% of the first retailers
they called on, Amazon.com and Newegg.com, to buy Aerius phones.

CTO – Greg Johnson brings 30 years of antenna design and manufacturing experience to Aerius. Johnson products
include consumer, commercial, and military antennas for companies worldwide that have gained more than 20 patents,
and Johnson antennas are currently used on U.S. and NATO military platforms worldwide such as combat vehicles and
aircraft. Johnson also designed numerous high performance antennas for the CIA, the Australian military, and companies
such as Toyota and Mazda Motors.

VP, Manufacturing – Joe Davis among many accomplishments Davis served as GM of a Silicon Valley Metal Products
firm where he supplied over 125 million parts to the Ford Motor Company and achieved ISO 9000 certifications. Mr.
Davis also was VP manufacturing for RangeStar from 1998 until 2001, a company founded by Bill Luxon and Greg
Johnson, where he traveled worldwide selecting cell phone antenna manufacturers. Davis has earned two BS degrees
from the University of Colorado, and a Masters Degree from Stanford University.

CFO – Les Shinozawa is an experienced wireless industry professional. He served as CFO and VP of Finance for
CellularOne in San Francisco, now AT&T Wireless, and was Director of Finance for PacTel Cellular, later AirTouch, now
merged with Vodafone in the UK.
